Mathematical Modelling of Traffic Flow at Bottlenecks

چکیده
This master’s thesis gives a brief overview of mathematical modelling of traffic flow from different perspectives. Focus lies on the fluid flow analogy first derived by Lighthill, Whitham and Richards (LWR) in the 1950’s which treats a traffic stream as a compressible one-dimensional fluid. The LWR theory is applied to bottleneck queueing situations, more specifically to junctions with one outgoing and two incoming roads. Problems are analysed through two different models, utilising two different sets of flow merge rules. The models are compared and contrasted through steady-state solutions and more general queueing situations. Benefits and drawbacks of the respective models are discussed and some further modifications and extensions are suggested.

Balanced vehicular traffic at a bottleneck
The balanced vehicular traffic model is a macroscopic model for vehicular traffic flow. We use this model to study the traffic dynamics at highway bottlenecks either caused by the restriction of the number of lanes or by on-ramps or off-ramps. The coupling conditions for the Riemann problem of the system are applied in order to treat the interface between different road sections consistently. O...
متن کاملRamp Metering and Freeway Bottleneck Capacity
This study aims to determine whether ramp meters increase the capacity of active freeway bottlenecks. The traffic flow characteristics at twenty-seven active bottlenecks in the Twin Cities have been studied for seven weeks without ramp metering and seven weeks with ramp metering. A methodology for systematically identifying active freeway bottlenecks in a metropolitan area is proposed, which re...

The objective of this study is to determine whether ramp meters increase the capacity of active freeway bottlenecks, and if they do, how. The traffic flow characteristics at twenty-seven active bottlenecks in the Twin Cities have been studied for seven weeks without ramp metering and seven weeks with ramp metering. A series of hypotheses regarding the relationships between ramp metering and the...
متن کاملLiterature Review of Traffic Assignment: Static and Dynamic
Rapid urban growth is resulting into increase in travel demand and private vehicle ownership in urban areas. In the present scenario the existing infrastructure has failed to match the demand that leads to traffic congestion, vehicular pollution and accidents. With traffic congestion augmentation on the road, delay of commuters has increased and reliability of road network has decreased. Four s...
متن کاملStatistical Forecasting of High-Way Traffic Jam
Maintenance works on high-ways usually require installation of bottlenecks that disturb traffic. The article presents a new mathematical model for analysis and forecasting of traffic jam evolution in front of a bottleneck. The model is comprised of two partial differential equations for the mean velocity and density of cars. The first equation describes relaxation of velocity to its equilibrium...
